Domino Whisker Irish, b. 1988

Biography

Domino Whisker (b. 1988) is an Irish self-taught textile artist based in Dublin. Using embroidery, she creates deeply personal and emotionally resonant works incorporating sentimental phrases and powerful symbols.

Whisker’s artistic journey began while caring for her father, who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. What started as a cathartic outlet evolved into a profound exploration of themes such as loss, grief, universal reflection, and the search for hope and resilience through thread.

Raised amid the dynamic cultural landscape of Los Angeles, Whisker’s work is imbued with the warmth and nostalgia of her Californian upbringing. Sun-drenched coastlines, the vast Pacific Ocean, and the iconic silhouette of her father’s 1967 Chevy Impala are cherished memories she uses as recurring motifs in her embroidery. These elements anchor her work in a sense of place and personal history, while inviting viewers to contemplate on the broader human experience.

Recently, Whisker has expanded her artistic expression into large-scale, vibrantly colored tapestries, often crafted using Irish wool. These immersive textile works, incorporating bold geometric shapes and vivid colors, function as portals – offering viewers an escape into imaginary realms and a momentary respite from the weight of reality. Her work celebrates the beauty found within complexity and offers a space for reflection, comfort, and wonder.
Mental health remains a core focus of Whisker’s artistic practice. In recognition of her significant engagement with art as a medium of healing, she was awarded the prestigious RCSI Art Award in 2021. Her work continues to resonate amongst viewers and collectors for its layered storytelling and emotional nuance, seamlessly connecting individual narrative with collective sentiment.

Whisker’s works have been exhibited internationally, including Los Angeles, Aix-en-Provence, Dublin, and now, New York City.
